The number of cars on the road is expected to increase from 900 million today to 2 billion by 2050. A variety of fuels and techniques will be needed to meet the growing demand for mobility while limiting CO2 emissions. The drive towards smarter mobility will be influenced by government policies, advances in technology, cost and environmental concerns. Mark Gainsborough, EVP Strategy, Portfolio and Alternative Energy at Shell, explains our “Smarter Mobility” programme, which includes developing more energy-efficient fuels and lubricants; investment in sustainable biofuels; offering drivers fuel-saving tips; and helping to reduce CO2 emissions from road-building.
